Context
Online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is critical for English language teachers in the ASEAN region because it provides accessible, flexible, and cost-effective opportunities for professional growth. Given the geographic diversity and varying infrastructural capabilities across countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, online CPD eliminates the barrier of physical distance and allows teachers to update their skills and pedagogical approaches without the need for extensive travel. This is particularly important in regions where in-person training can be sporadic or hard to reach, ensuring that educators can continuously access high-quality resources and learning experiences relevant to the fast-evolving field of English language teaching.
Additionally, online CPD enables the tailoring of professional development content to address the unique cultural and educational challenges in the ASEAN region. Digital platforms allow for the creation and dissemination of context-specific resources, facilitating a community of practice where teachers can share local best practices, collaborate with peers across borders, and discuss region-specific strategies for enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. Such a collaborative network not only supports individual teacher growth but also contributes to the broader effort to uplift the quality of education throughout the region, ensuring that teaching methodologies remain modern, inclusive, and culturally relevant.
By leveraging online CPD, educational stakeholders in ASEAN can foster a culture of continuous improvement that directly impacts classroom performance and student achievement. Access to interactive webinars, video tutorials, and virtual workshops helps teachers integrate the latest educational technologies and innovative teaching practices into their classrooms, making learning more engaging for students. This ongoing professional development is crucial for adapting to new challenges such as digital learning environments and ensuring that English language teaching remains robust and effective. In an era where technology is rapidly reshaping education, online CPD offers a sustainable pathway to lifelong learning for teachers, ultimately benefiting not only educators but also the diverse student populations they serve.
Implementation
TELT was commissioned by the British Council to research and map the digital CPD landscape for pre-service and in-service basic-education (primary and secondary) English teachers in six countries — Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. The mixed-methods study combined desk research, stakeholder interviews across regional and national providers, and a large teacher survey translated and distributed locally and looked into innovations in CPD, notably online/digital CPD since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
