Context

In 2021, The Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) acknowledged the value of formative assessment (assessment for learning) in the teaching of English from Primary Grade 3 to Secondary Grade 12. In a far-sighted and progressive policy, MOET took a comprehensive approach to fully integrating formative assessment practices within the national curriculum.

Implementation

TELT was engaged to review and revise the guidelines demonstrating the principles and practice of classroom-based assessment and teacher’s manuals at primary grades 3–5 (previously produced by Cambridge Assessment), and to produce further guidelines and graded manuals for years 6–12.

Each grade-specific manual develops and implements the overarching guidelines and provides level-appropriate approaches for formative assessment at each school grade. The manuals provide teachers with guidance on good practice and example assessment activities, including samples of mid- and end-of-term tests for each of the two semesters for each grade.
